Tabaré González (politician)

Tabaré González (born February 13, 1936 in Montevideo ; † May 10, 2013 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician .

Tabaré González graduated from the medical faculty of the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) successfully in 1965 . As a doctor, he specialized in the fields of anesthesiology, intensive care medicine and health care. He married Marta Römer, a senior nurse in the emergency department of the Montevidean Hospital de Clínicas . With her he had three daughters and four grandchildren. González subsequently worked, among other things, as an employee at the Chair of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine at the UdelaR and held various functions at the Hospital de Clínicas. However, he lost this position in 1975 after the civil-military dictatorship took place in Uruguay. He also worked in Montevideo for the CASMU , the Hospital Italiano , the Hospital Britanico and the Sanatorio Impasa. After going into exile in the meantime, he carried out scientific and technical activities in various Latin American countries, including Ecuador , Nicaragua and Bolivia . From 1980 to 1985 he was a consultant to the OPS / OMS in those countries. In 1985 he returned to Uruguay, but was still active as a consultant for the OPS at times until 1996. From 1990 to 1995 he worked in the Intendencia of Montevideo as the deputy of the then Intendente Tabaré Vázquez , for whom he temporarily took over the office of Intendente in various phases. Until 1992 he held the position of General Director of the Department of Health and Social Affairs. Then he was responsible for the central unit of urban planning ("Unidad Central de Planificación Municipal") until June 1994. From this point on he was Intendente of the Department of Montevideo until February 15, 1995 . In 1997 he was given a visiting professorship at the Brazilian Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul . In the 45th legislative period González took over a mandate as deputy senator in the Cámara de Senadores for a few days as a representative of the Partido Encuentro Progresista / Frente Amplio . From 2005 he was chairman of the Administración de Servicios de Salud del Estado (ASSE) and was replaced by Baltasar Aguilar after his resignation in 2008 .
