Lucía Topolansky Saavedra (born September 25, 1944 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician. She belongs to the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional - Tupamaros and the Movimiento de Participación Popular , part of the Frente Amplio , she served for a long time as a senator in the upper house of parliament. She is the wife of José Mujica (President 2010–2015). She was the Vice President of Uruguay from September 2017 to February 2020.

Life

Lucía Topolansky and her twin sister María Elia were born in Montevideo as the youngest children of the engineer Luis Topolansky Müller and his wife María Elia Saavedra Rodríguez, who already had five children. The family lived in Punta del Este for a few years before returning to the capital.

After graduating from high school, Topolansky studied architecture at the Universidad de la República before leaving the university in 1969. As early as 1967 she had joined the guerrilla group Movimiento de Liberación Nacional - Tupamaros, in which she also met José Mujica.

She was arrested for the first time in 1970, but escaped a few months later. Another arrest followed in 1972, whereupon she remained in custody until 1985, when she was released through an amnesty. Like other prisoners, Topolansky was subjected to physical and psychological torture during her detention. In 2005, after living together for a long time, she married José Mujica.

Political career

After her release, Topolansky and other members of the Tupamaros founded the Movimiento de Participación Popular (MPP), a movement that joined the left-wing party alliance Frente Amplio in 1989 . In 2000 she moved into the Chamber of Deputies . In the 2004 elections in Uruguay , she headed the MPP's list. Your faction received the most votes within the MPP, which overall outstripped the previously ruling Partido Colorado . Her husband became a minister in March 2005 while serving on various parliamentary committees. Topolansky's notoriety rose significantly when her husband ran for Uruguay's 2009 elections. When he was elected president, his wife, the senator with the most votes, swore his oath. As a result of her husband's inauguration, she was at the side of the President for five years from March 2010. In October 2014 she was re-elected Senator. On March 7, 2015, she announced her candidacy for the post of Intendente in the Montevideo Department or for that of Mayoress.

She was the Vice President of Uruguay from September 2017 to February 2020 - after the resignation of Raúl Fernando Sendic .
