Otto I. von Graben , Lord of Kornberg , Burgrave of Gleichenberg (* 13th century Alt-Grabenhofen Castle ; † before 1360 Kornberg Castle ) was a knight and member of the nobility of the Duchy of Styria .

Life

origin

Otto came from the noble family of the Lords of Graben, which was absorbed into the ministry in the 13th century . His parents were Ulrich I. von Graben and Gertrud († both around 1325); Otto could have been born at Alt-Grabenhofen Castle , the seat of Von Graben who moved from the Duchy of Krain to Styria.

Act

Otto's first documentary mention dates back to the year 1300, when he and his brothers Veit, Ulrich II. And Friedrich I von Graben donated an annual legacy to the Rein Abbey . In 1324 he and his brother Ulrich were sealed in the certificate of exchange of goods for their nephews, the Lords of Stubenberg . In 1325 the abbot of the Rein monastery committed to the Graben brothers to read an annual commemorative mass for their father Ulrich, who died in the same year.

In 1328 the brothers Otto, Ulrich and Friedrich acquired the Kornberg rule and the Kornberg Castle , which they bought from Friedrich Chorenberger. Kornberg became the headquarters of the Graben and gave its name to the Styrian line, the Kornberger line . The Graben brothers also bought the villages of Edelsbach and Krottendorf as well as the Wetzelsdorf estate . In 1332 Eckel von Friedberg sold the March service to the brothers Otto I., Ulrich II. And Friedrich I. von Graben on 20 hubs in Rassendorf, today's Ratschendorf. Otto von Graben's grave is at Kornberg Castle.

Family relationships

You can also learn that Otto was first married to Katarina von Purgstall and that this marriage had three children, Heinrich, Elisabeth and Beata. His second marriage was with Adelheid Hofferin; from this marriage came the sons Friedrich and Wolfgang and the daughters Veronica, Barbara and Dorothea. Otto is named in a document as Ulrich von Stubenberg's uncle . Otto must have entered into a third marriage. However, the name of his wife cannot be found out; What is certain is that she was the widow of the Symon von Tobel. Towards the end of his life he also appeared as a buyer of Stubenberg fiefs in and around Markt Hartmannsdorf . Otto von Graben was also mentioned as Ott von Graben von Gleichenberg , from which it can be concluded that, like some of his relatives, he was a Walsee administrator or burgrave of Gleichenberg .

coat of arms

Through the joint purchase of Kornberg by the brothers Otto I., Ulrich II. And Friedrich I. in 1328 from Friedrich Kornberger, including the coat of arms and accessories , a new coat of arms was adopted, the one with the shovel, the spade; this could provide the explanation of the different gender coat of arms of the Kornberg line of the lords of Graben and their ancestry in Lower Austria, Tyrol and the Netherlands (but not in Carinthia and East Tyrol) to the family coat of arms with the sloping beam.

Annotation:

  • From his mother Gertraud von Graben (Gertravt Grabnerin) her coat of arms seal with the sloping beam from 1331 has been preserved.
