Barros Blancos is a city in southern Uruguay .

geography

It is located in the southwest of the Departamento Canelones in its sector 16 and sector 37 . It is surrounded both in the west and in the east by the city of Fraccionamiento Camino Maldonado, which is divided into two settlement areas . The Arroyo Meireles runs southwest of the city , while the small river Meneses and south of the de la Totora , a tributary of the Arroyo Pando, flow in the urban area .

history

The city was founded in 1940. The name Barros Blancos goes back to the color of the soil in the area. In 1976 it was named Capitán Juan Antonio Artigas after Juan Antonio Artigas, who had settled here in 1730. However, since 2007 the city has been back to its original name. In the last few decades it has shown enormous population growth, with an influx of the lower middle class or people belonging to the lower class from nearby Montevideo. Ultimately, this also led to the fact that, since the 1980s, there has been almost a convergence with the neighboring cities of Pando and Montevideo .
