Empalme Olmos is a town in the Canelones Department in southern Uruguay .
Since 2010 the municipality (Municipio) Empalme Olmos, to which the place Olmos also belongs. 6,630 inhabitants live in the municipal area of 152.5 km².
geography
Empalme Olmos is located at an altitude of 40 m above sea level, 40 kilometers by road northeast of the state capital Montevideo , with which the place is connected via the Ruta 8 . The town of Pando , about 10 km to the south-west , and Atlántida in the south-east are in the vicinity .
history
The name of the city can be traced back to Octaviano Olmos, who provided the land for the railway connection. On November 3, 1952, Empalme Olmos was classified in the " Pueblo " category by Law 11.877 . The company Cerámicas Olmos (Metzen y Sena), founded on May 26, 1937 under the leadership of Carlos von Metzen von Bülow, Ricardo Rodolfo Bayer and his son Rodolfo Ricardo and employing more than 800 people, was located here until it closed in December 2009. On July 1, 2013, the company reopened and production resumed in the presence of President José Mujica .

Residents
The city had 4,199 inhabitants at the last census conducted in 2011. For 2010, the Intendencia de Canelones stated a population of 5,497, which, however, deviates significantly from the values of the Instituto Nacional de Estadística de Uruguay .
