Progreso is a city in southern Uruguay .
geography
It is located in the area of the Department Canelones in its 4th sector north of the immediately adjacent city of Las Piedras , which is separated from Progreso by the Arroyo Colorado , and near the west of Ruta 5 . To the east, the Arroyo del Gigante passes the city in a few kilometers . The sources of the del Colorado and the Arroyo Colorado Chico , two tributaries of the Arroyo Colorado, are located in the urban area of Progresos and on the western city limits . In addition, the de la Lana , which flows into the Arroyo Canelón Chico and flows east of the towns of Fraccionamiento Progreso , Villa Felicidad , Instituto Adventista and Parada Cabrera to the north of Progreso, rises here .
history
Settlement of the area of today's Progreso began in 1745. In the second half of the 18th century, an increasing number of farmers and traders settled there. At the end of the 19th century, the area in which the fields there were mainly used for agriculture and cattle breeding was known as Arroyo del Gigante , Puntas del Gigante or Puntas del Colorado . The city received its current name, the process of which began on November 15, 1871, after the construction of the railway reached the city in that year and from now on it housed the station of the same name. As a result, railway workers also settled here, many of whom were of English origin. On July 1, 1953, Progreso was classified in the "Pueblo" category by Law No. 11,968.

In Progreso is the parish of San Antonio María Claret , which belongs to the diocese of Canelones and was founded on July 7, 1944, with the associated church.
education
With the Liceo de Progreso "Doctor Gilberto Iglesias" founded in 1965, the city has a secondary school ( Liceo ). The London Institute Progreso is also located in Progreso .
