Lisandro Otero

Lisandro Otero (born June 4, 1933 in Havana , Cuba ; † January 3, 2008 ) was a Cuban writer , journalist and diplomat .

Life

Lisandro Otero studied philosophy in Havana until 1954 and graduated from the Manuel Márquez Sterling School with a degree in journalism . From 1954 to 1956 he studied literature at the Sorbonne in Paris . He was editor-in-chief of Cuban magazines such as Cuba Magazine and Revolución y Cultura . He also works with other newspapers such as Bohemia , Carteles , Granma , Juventud Rebelde , El Mundo , Casa de las Américas , Unión , La Gaceta de Cuba , as well as in Le Monde Diplomatique , Partisans , Europe , Washington Post , Excelsior from Mexico and most recently with El Sol de Mexico . He was a cultural attaché in Chile, Great Britain and the Soviet Union.

Since 2004 Lisandro Otero was President of the Cuban Academy of Language .

Work and honors

Otero was considered one of the most important authors in Cuba. He has published more than 20 books and numerous essays, short stories and journalistic articles. His work has been translated into fourteen languages.

In 1963 Otero was awarded the literary prize of the Casa de las Américas competition for La situación . In 1965 he won an award at the Biblioteca Breve competition in Barcelona for his novel Pasión de Urbino (Urbinos Passion) and in 1983 he received the literary criticism prize for Temporadas de Angeles . In 2002 he was awarded the National Prize for Literature . In 1991 he was made an honorary professor at the Art Academy in Havana . In addition, Otero was honored with the National Prize for Journalism in Cuba , the Félix Elmuza Order , the medal for the fighter in the secret struggle and the commemorative medal for the 30th anniversary of the Cuban army, as well as the Alejo Carpentier medal .

He was a member of the Royal Academy for the Spanish Language and a member of the North American Academy for the Spanish Language .

He wrote the book for the musical El Solar . His works have been translated into German, Italian, French, English, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Czech.
