Voltaire Prize

The Voltaire Prize has been awarded by the University of Potsdam since 2017 . The award, sponsored by the Friede Springer Foundation , is given to international scientists who advocate freedom of research and teaching as well as the right to freedom of expression . A jury decides on the winner of the Voltaire Prize. It includes (as of 2019) Oliver Günther , Florian J. Schweigert , Hans Joachim Schellnhuber , Ottmar Ette and Christoph Markschies .

The prize is named after the French philosopher , writer and central representative of the Enlightenment Voltaire (1694–1778).

The Potsdam-based artist Mikos Meininger created a sculpture for the Voltaire Prize.
