Florian J. Schweigert (born March 8, 1958 in Munich ) is a German nutritionist and veterinarian . He is professor for physiology and pathophysiology of nutrition at the University of Potsdam .

Life

Schweigert studied veterinary medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1978 to 1983 . In 1984 he was licensed as a veterinarian. Two years later he received his doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilians University under Hermann Zucker . There he completed his habilitation in the subjects of physiology and physiological chemistry in 1990. From 1988 to 1990 he was a "Research Fellow in Medicine" at Harvard Medical School in Boston as part of a DFG grant . Since 1991 he has been a veterinarian for physiology.

In 1992, he was offered the newly established professorship for nutritional physiology at the Veterinary Medicine Faculty of the University of Leipzig . In 1996 he was appointed to the newly established chair for physiology and pathophysiology of nutrition at the University of Potsdam , where he is still active today. Since January 2016 he has been Vice President of the University of Potsdam for international affairs, alumni and fundraising.

Schweigert was President of the Society for Applied Vitamin Research (GVF) and is a member of the advisory board of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) , the Danone Foundation for Healthy Eating and the Potsdam University Society . Schweigert has been a jury member for the Voltaire Prize since 2017 .

He is married to the ophthalmologist Ute Kariger-Schweigert and has four children.

Research priorities

The focus of the scientific work is on the metabolism and the function of fat-soluble vitamins in humans and animals as well as questions of the modulation of nutritionally relevant biomarkers in connection with physiological and pathophysiological processes in humans and animals. This applies to kidney function as well as the influence of inflammation, cancer and neurological diseases in humans and animals. Another focal point is the investigation of the interaction of food ingredients with proteins, the field of nutriproteomics, with the aim of identifying targets in the organism for nutritive and non-nutritive food components.

The focus is on issues related to the metabolic syndrome and the fight against malnutrition in developing countries. Research in the field of metabolic syndrome focuses on questions relating to the interaction between kidney diseases and vitamins. Metabolite and proteome analysis is used to assess the influence of post-translational modifications on ligand transport protein and protein-protein interaction using the example of the transport complex for vitamin A and thyroid hormone .

In the area of ​​combating malnutrition in developing countries, research and capacity building activities are on-site. For example, the bioavailability of micronutrients from local staple foods and from fortified and bio-fortified foods. In connection with these investigations, analytical methods were developed that allow a quick, simple and inexpensive analysis of food for micronutrients and blood samples for nutrition-dependent biomarkers on site. On the basis of this patented analytical test procedure, Schweigert founded the company BioAnalyt GmbH. This analytical capacity building in developing countries is supplemented by teaching activities in the field of international nutrition with financial support from the DAAD and BMZ . Schweigert is the initiator of the Potsdam Summer School of International Nutrition.

Schweigert is also researching the topic of insects as food and published a popular science introductory work on this in 2020.
