Iván Helguera Bujía (born March 28, 1975 in Santander , Cantabria ) is a former Spanish football player .

Career

Helguera first caught on with Albacete Balompié during the 1996/97 season and was signed by AS Roma in 1997 .

He then moved to Espanyol Barcelona ( 1999 ) and finally to Real Madrid in 1999 , where he celebrated his greatest successes: Champions League titles in 2000 and 2002 , Spanish champions 2001 , 2003 and 2007 .

At Real Madrid he was used in both central defense and defensive midfield. In the 2006/07 season Helguera was no longer part of the regular formation under the then coach Fabio Capello . In the summer of 2007 he went to Valencia .

On December 12, 2008, he dissolved his contract with Valencia CF, as he was hardly used by the new coach Unai Emery . Since then he was looking for a new club, but there was no commitment.

National team

From 1998 to 2004 he played in the Spanish national team and took part in the European Championships in 2000 and 2004 and in the 2002 World Cup. He played in central defense or in defensive midfield.
