Mensur Mujdža (born March 28, 1984 in Zagreb , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian soccer player who was under contract with the German second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern until June 2017 . He plays as a right-footer and acts as a right-back most of the time. He is currently without a club. His brother Jasmin Mujdža is also a soccer player.

Career

Until 2009

He played for NK Zagreb since he was nine. Between 2002 and 2009, Mujdža played 135 times for NK Zagreb in the highest Croatian league, where he played in addition to his position as a right-back also increasingly in the right midfield and scored a total of five goals. Mujdža played for Zagreb in his entire youth before moving to the pros. His jersey number was 24. In 2004/05 and 2006/07 he achieved the best result of the season with the club with third place. Mujdža made its first experiences on an international level when NK Zagreb was allowed to participate in the then UEFA Intertoto Cup after the 2003/04 season, as well as in 2007/08 . However, they were eliminated in the first round. In the 2007/08 season he scored his first goal in the 1st HNL for NK Zagreb in a duel against NK Inter Zapresic on July 22, 2007 (3-0) . His last season in Zagreb in 2008/09 he finished with the NK Zagreb in fifth place. In his last game for Zagreb against NK Zadar (3: 1), he also scored his last goal for his club at the time, with an intermediate score of 2: 1. During this time, Mensur Mujdža was used once for the Croatian U-20 national team and several times for the U-21 national team, most recently in a game against Ukraine in September 2006 .

In 2009 he moved to the German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg . Mujdža, who came to Freiburg for a transfer fee of around € 500,000, was traded primarily as the successor to Daniel Schwaab , who moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . His speed, technical skill and his robust appearance on the field were arguments for the quick transfer, also because he was considered a defender with a great urge to attack. The transfer was finally announced on June 17, 2009. As in Zagreb, he got the shirt number 24 in Freiburg.

2009/10 season

Mensur Mujdža had to deal with initial difficulties. He got his first brief appearance in the Bundesliga on matchday three of the season against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (0-5) when he came on for Jonathan Jäger in the 76th minute . Four more, shorter missions followed at more irregular intervals. With the words "To see the team play and not to be able to help, that was the worst", Mujdža described this early period. On the 26th matchday against record champions FC Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena (1: 2), he was in the starting line-up of SC Freiburg for the first time before he was substituted in the 75th minute. Mujdža then described this match as the biggest game in his life to date. With this game he achieved his final breakthrough in Freiburg, as he was able to convince throughout this game. Then Mensur Mujdža was an integral part of the starting XI, he played every game from the beginning until the end of the season and was never substituted. In these games he received three yellow cards and was always found on the right side of the defense. Towards the end of the season, Mujdža received increased praise for his patient and committed work in the team, as the then coach Robin Dutt also said : "He never complained and always gave full throttle", during which Mujdža only had short assignments, but still gave everything in training. He thus developed into a regular player and was then an integral part of the starting XI. Mujdža emphasized that he had never lost faith in himself and that it was primarily the different sporting requirements resulting from the move from Croatia to Germany that were the reason for the teething problems. With SC Freiburg, he reached 14th place in the league this season, after relegation was secured after the 33rd matchday against 1. FC Köln (2-2).

2010/11 season

The season began for Mensur Mujdža in a duel against FC St. Pauli (1: 3) on the first match day. Mujdža was in the starting line-up and had to be replaced after the first half due to an injury. After that, the right-back always played 90 minutes until matchday 10, but on matchday 11 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 he had to sit out due to knee problems. Against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (1-0) on the 12th matchday he was back and until the 24th matchday he continued to play in every game over the entire duration of the game. In the 1-0 defeat against 1. FC Köln, however, Mujdža received his fifth yellow card of the season and was therefore suspended for the game against Werder Bremen . From the 26th matchday on, he was in the starting line-up for every SC Freiburg game and was used in every game. The match on April 17, 2011 against Borussia Dortmund in the Westfalenstadion (0: 3) was the game with the greatest backdrop for him with 80,720 spectators. Mujdža finished the season in which he was used in 32 of 34 games with SC Freiburg in ninth place in the Bundesliga and thus missed the qualification for the European Cup that had been possible for a long time, as the first half of the season was even in sixth place finished. In addition to his good overview of the game and stamina, Mujdža was characterized by his consistency, tackling strength and security in the passing game. His achievements made an important contribution to the stability of the Freiburg defense and the above-average performance of the club this season.

On January 12, 2011, Mensur Mujdža prematurely extended his contract with SC Freiburg until 2014. Freiburg's sporting director Dirk Dufner praised him with the words “The boy has made a great development”.

National team 2010/11

On May 6, 2010 Mensur Mujdža announced that, after talks with Safet Sušić, he had now decided on the senior national team of Bosnia-Herzegovina and would compete for it in the future. Since Mujdža has both Croatian and Bosnian citizenship, that was now possible. He made his debut on August 10, 2010 in a friendly against Qatar (1-1). His first appearance for Bosnia-Herzegovina was originally planned for the friendly against Germany on June 3, 2010 in Frankfurt am Main . However, he was unable to keep this appointment because the required approval has not yet been issued by FIFA. On September 3, 2010, he celebrated his first success with the national team in the 3-0 victory of Bosnia-Herzegovina at Stade Josy Barthels against Luxembourg and played his first official game at the same time. From then on, Mujdža was regularly used in the national jersey and played with Bosnia-Herzegovina for direct qualification for the 2012 European Football Championship . Mujdža played in all missions from the start.

2011/12 season

After Mujdža was on the pitch in the first two league games and in the DFB Cup for SC Freiburg, he had to pause for two game days because of a partial tear in the inner ligament. In the 1-0 success of the national team of Bosnia-Herzegovina on September 7, 2011 against Belarus , he successfully celebrated his comeback after a break of several weeks. On matchday five he made his comeback for SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga in the second half against FC Bayern Munich. In the following games, Mujdža was regularly used from the start. Mujdža was seriously injured in the European Championship qualifier between Bosnia and Herzegovina and France (1-1) on October 11, 2011 after a gross foul by Florent Malouda . He broke his metatarsal bone, which had to be operated on. At first there was talk of a break of two to three months, which already meant that he would not be able to play a game in 2011. His comeback was initially postponed at the beginning of the second half of the season and after successful development training, Mujdža finally returned to team training in the penultimate week of February. Mensur Mujdža celebrated his comeback in the Bundesliga on March 10, 2012 in a duel against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-0) on matchday 25. Against Gladbach, he played his last league game to date on October 1, 2011 (1-0), the 8th matchday of the season. "Mucki", his nickname, played in the starting XI right away and was replaced in the 79th minute. He did not play as a defender on the right side, as usual, but made his debut as a left-back. Coach Christian Streich justified this change with the fact that “Mensur is an intelligent player, I knew that he could do it” and thus he was able to make a successful comeback after a break of five months. In the away win on matchday 26 at Hamburger SV (3-1), he returned to the right outside of the defense. He crowned his good performance with the template for the interim 2-0 lead by Freiburg due to a cross in the 43rd minute of the game. In the 82nd minute he received the second yellow card of the season after a tactical foul. Unlike in Mönchengladbach, he played the full length of the game for the first time since his injury break. On matchday 27 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2-0) he was again 90 minutes as a right-back. In this game he showed his strength again and was also by far the strongest player on the field with a rate of over 80% won duels. His club SC Freiburg left the relegation ranks for the first time since the 8th matchday. On the 28th matchday in the consistently convincing 2-0 away win of the Freiburg team at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, he played a major role in preparing for the 1-0 lead by Julian Schuster after strong preparatory work and thus once again proved his qualities on the offensive, after having been involved in a goal in Hamburg two weeks earlier. On this match day, he also consistently received the best ratings in various soccer portals in the current season. In the following game on April 7, 2012 against 1. FC Nürnberg (2-2), he was again involved with a committed performance in the elaboration of the 2-2 equalizer by Cédric Makiadi as a result of a corner kick. On matchday 30, the Freiburg team were able to lay another important foundation stone to keep their league with an away win at Hertha BSC . For Mensur Mujdža it was the sixth game since his comeback and the sixth without a defeat, for his team it was the seventh game in a row. However, Mujdža injured himself in the same week and tore a muscle fiber in his thigh, causing him to be out again for a few weeks. On matchday 32, Mujdžas SC Freiburg was able to secure early relegation after a 0-0 win at Hannover 96, even though they had finished the first half of the season in 18th place in the table. Mensur Mujdža himself made his comeback on matchday 33 after surviving an injury break against 1. FC Köln (4-1). Mujdža offered a good performance as usual, which was crowned with his goal to the 1-0 lead, his first Bundesliga ever for SC Freiburg. At the end of the season, Mujdža took a respectable 12th place with SC Freiburg. On May 26, 2012, Mujdža finally celebrated his comeback for the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina after more than seven months, in a friendly against Ireland in Dublin . In the 1-0 defeat, he was used as a right-back for 56 minutes before he was substituted. Five days later in another friendly against Mexico (1: 2) in Chicago , he played the entire game again with a solid performance, but saw the yellow card in the 81st minute.

2012/13 season

Mujdža suffered another metatarsal injury at the beginning of the season in the cup match SC Victoria Hamburg (2-1). After surviving an injury break, he returned to the team on the second match day of the season in Leverkusen. In the clear home win of Bosnia-Herzegovina against Latvia (4-1), he played an official game for the national team for the first time in almost a year in mid-September. From then on he was in the starting line-up in all games for SC Freiburg, but in contrast to previous years he acted as a left-back in some games. In the game against VfB Stuttgart (3-0) on matchday 13, he got his 5th yellow card of the season in stoppage time and was therefore banned from Bayern Munich for matchday 14. Mujdža returned to the team on matchday 15 at FC Augsburg (1: 1). After the game on the 16th matchday against SpVgg Greuther Fürth (1-0), however, he had to pause for weeks due to an injury in his back. On matchday 25 against VfL Wolfsburg (2: 5), he finally made his comeback when he came on as a substitute in the closing stages. At the end of the season, Mujdža qualified with SC Freiburg for the first time in his career for the UEFA Europa League , after Freiburg ended the season in 5th place in the table.

National team 2013/14

On May 7, 2014, Mujdža was appointed to the squad of the senior national team for the 2014 World Cup by Bosnian coach Safet Susic .
