Leo Scheu , actually Leopold Scheu , (born March 28, 1886 in Olomouc ; † August 25, 1958 in Graz ) was an Austrian artist, academic painter and graphic artist as well as a well-known Styrian ice skater and official at the Graz ice skating club .

life and work

Leo Scheu was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with Vlaho Bukovac and Thiele and at the Vienna painting school with Jaschke . From 1913 to 1945 he taught at the 1st Bundesrealschule in Graz as a lecturer at the University of Graz , which made him an honorary member. He was also a specialist inspector in Carinthia and Styria and also a court expert.
In the first half of the 20th century he created a series of portraits of rectors for the University of Graz and the Technical University of Graz . Public figures and the Catholic Church also had numerous portraits made by him and established his reputation as one of the most important portraitists of his time. Leopold Scheu was president of the Grazer Künstlerbund, which he founded, and of the Styrian regional group, the professional association of Austrian visual artists, for many years.

He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .

Use for ice skating

As an athlete, Leopold Scheu is also of importance for the history of Graz. In 1921 he was the founder of the Graz Ice Skating Club and also the first president of the Styrian Ice Skating Association founded in 1923. Scheu also acted as the first figure skater in Graz, as championship judge for the Austrian Ice Skating Association and as an assessor on the association's board. In 1925 he became Vice President of the Austrian Ice Skating Association alongside Fritz Kachler.

  • The Leo-Scheu-Gasse was named after him in the VII. District in Graz.
  • In memory of his achievements for ice skating in Styria, the “Professor Leo-Scheu-Lauf” has been held every year since 1971 by the Graz Ice Skating Club and the Graz Artificial Ice Rink Club . The Professor Leo-Scheu-Laufen was held for the first time as an international competition last year and is now called Icechallenge , Leo Scheu Memorial.
