Thomas de Camoys, 1st Baron Camoys (* before 1368, † March 28, 1421 ) was an English nobleman and knight of the Order of the Garter .

Origin and family

He was the son of Sir John Camoys (1310-1383) and his second wife Elizabeth de Latimer (1334-1389). His grandfather, Ralph de Camoys, 1st Baron Camoys († 1335) was given the title of Baron Camoys in 1313 . When the half-brother of his father Thomas de Camoys, 2nd Baron Camoys, died in 1372 without leaving any children, he inherited his fortune and lands, but not the baron title, which expired.

life and career

Thomas de Camoys initially served the Crown as a soldier and became Knight Banneret in 1383 . He had also previously been elected to the House of Commons for the county of Surrey , but was given leave of absence from attendance at the meetings in 1383 because of his military assignments. In the same year he received a Writ of Summons from King Richard II , which appointed him to the House of Lords and thus created the hereditary title Baron Camoys in the second bestowal. The newly appointed 1st Baron Camoys served his kings (Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V ) as an advisor in the meetings of the House of Lords until 1420, but also as a general in the Hundred Years War against France. In the brilliant victory at the Battle of Agincourt on October 12, 1415 , he commanded the left wing of the English armed forces. The king rewarded him with acceptance into the Order of the Garter.

He died on March 28, 1421 and was buried in Trotton. Since his eldest son had already died at this point, his son, his underage grandson Hugh de Camoys , inherited him as 2nd Baron Camoys.

Marriages and offspring

Thomas de Camoys was first married to Elizabeth Louches (around 1360-1403). With her he had a son:

  • Sir Richard de Camoys (1375 – before 1421)

After the death of his first wife, he married Elizabeth de Mortimer (1371-1417), daughter of Edmund de Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March and widow of Henry Percy (⚔ 1403), called Hotspur. He had two children with her.

  • Sir Roger de Camoys (around 1406–1473)
  • Alice de Camoys (1407-1455)
