Stonor Park

The Camoys family is of Anglo-Norman descent. She appears with the knight Ralph des Camoys († 1259), whose son, who was also named Ralph, who was Constable of Pevensey Castle, in 1264 through writ of summons in the parliament of the nobles rebelling against King Edward I under Simon de Montfort, 6. Earl of Leicester was appointed. This vocation was not recognized by the crown, with the result that this writ did not result in a hereditary barony of Camoys. His son Edmund de Camoys, who died in 1298, inherited Torpel in Northants from his mother . His son Ralph de Camoys received a writ of summons in 1313 and thus became 1st Baron Camoys (1st award). He was Constable of Windsor Castle , took part in Despenser's rebellion against the king, but was pardoned. When his son Thomas de Camoys died in 1372, the barony was extinguished because his only son had died before him.

Only Thomas' half-nephew, Sir Thomas de Camoys, who in 1372 did not inherit the family property but did not inherit the title, was appointed to the House of Lords by Richard II in 1383 through writ of summons and thus hereditary peer of the empire (2nd award). After the death of his grandson Hugh de Camoys, the 2nd Baron Camoys, the barony fell into abeyance because Hugh had only female heirs. The title then remained in abeyance for over 400 years, until it was successfully petitioned by the descendant of a daughter entitled to inheritance and restituted for Thomas Stonor, in whose family it still exists today.

The family seat of the Barons Camoys is Stonor Park near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire .
