Richard Sackville, 3rd Earl of Dorset (born March 28, 1589 in the Charter House in London , † March 28, 1624 in the Dorset House in London) was an English nobleman and statesman .

Life

Richard was the eldest son of Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset and a grandson of Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset (1536-1608). Between 1612 and 1624 he served as Lord Lieutenant of Sussex with Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham and Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel .

On February 27, 1609 he married Lady Anne Clifford (1590–1676), only daughter of George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland († 1605) and his wife Lady Margaret Russell of Bedford († 1616). The rather unhappy marriage resulted in five children, of which only the two daughters, Isabella (1622–1719) and Margaret (1624–1676), reached adulthood.

Despite the enormous income from the lands, Sackville was heavily in debt due to his passion for gambling. Therefore, in 1617 he signed his wife's renunciation of inheritance to her uncle, who had inherited the entire property when her father died. Lady Anne tried for years to regain the claim to the inheritance. After the waiver, the Earl of Dorset's gambling debts were paid off.

Richard Sackville died on Easter Sunday 1624 and was buried in St Michael's Parish Church in Withyham, Sussex. Since he died without a male heir, his younger brother Edward inherited his title and lands. His widow married Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke , in 1630 .
