Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham KG (* 1536 , † December 14, 1624 near Croydon , Surrey ) was an English statesman and admiral.

He was the son of William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham , (* around 1510, † 1573) and Margaret Gamage († May 18, 1581), a daughter of Sir Thomas Gamage. His grandfather was Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk .

In July 1563 he married Catherine Carey (* 1547; † 1603), daughter of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon . After her death he married Lady Margaret Stuart, daughter of James Stuart, 2nd Lord Doune and Elizabeth Stewart, 2nd Countess of Moray, in September 1603 .

In 1573, when his father died, he inherited his title as 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham .

He had been a Knight of the Order of the Garter since 1575 . On July 8, 1585, Howard was appointed Lord High Admiral . A year later he was involved in the trial of Maria Stuart . In 1587 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the English fleet that was deployed against the Spanish Armada, although he was then not directly involved in the fight against the Spanish Armada . Its flagship was the Ark Royal . In 1596 he and Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex , commanded the expedition that sacked Cadiz . In July 1597 he became Chief Justice in Eyre south of Trent. On October 22, 1597 he was made Earl of Nottingham in recognition of his services . In 1601 he was responsible for suppressing the Essex Rebellion. Howard died in 1624 at the age of 88.

His eldest son from his first marriage, William Howard , was appointed 3rd Baron Howard of Effingham to the House of Lords by Writ of Acceleration in 1603 and thereby inherited this title prematurely. However, William died in 1615 without male descendants, so that the barony reverted to him and on his death in 1624 his second son from his first marriage, Charles Howard , inherited his titles as 2nd Earl and 4th Baron. He died childless in 1642 and his title fell to his half-brother from his second marriage, Charles Howard, as 3rd Earl and 5th Baron. When he died childless in 1681, the title of Earl of Nottingham became extinct . The title Baron Howard of Effingham passed on to the next male agnate, the descendant of a cousin, and continues to this day after the 12th Baron was made Earl of Effingham .
