Earl of Effingham
Earl of Effingham is a hereditary British nobility title , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Great Britain and the Peerage of the United Kingdom . All awards were made to members of the Howard family . The title is named after the village of Effingham in Surrey .
Awards
The title was first created on December 8, 1731 in the Peerage of Great Britain for Francis Howard, 7th Baron Howard of Effingham , a guard officer . The title expired on December 10, 1816 when his grandson, the 4th Earl, died childless.
The second bestowal took place on January 27, 1837 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Kenneth Howard, 11th Baron Howard of Effingham , a third cousin of the last earl of the first bestowal, who had distinguished himself as a soldier in the Napoleonic Wars . This had already inherited his subordinate, older title as 12th Baron Howard of Effingham from this.
Subordinate title
Ancestor of all Earls in both awards was Lord William Howard , a younger son of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk . He held important state offices, including Lord Admiral and Lord Chancellor . On March 11, 1554 he was raised by Queen Mary I in the Peerage of England to Baron Howard of Effingham . This barony is used as a subordinate title by the respective earl. At the same time, the earl's eldest son uses the courtesy title of Lord Howard of Effingham as his title heir .
Another title
The 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham was also Lord Admiral. On October 22, 1596 he was raised to Earl of Nottingham in the Peerage of England . His eldest son was appointed to the House of Lords on January 31, 1604 by Writ of Acceleration and thereby inherited the title of Baron Howard of Effingham from his father. Since he died childless before his father in 1615, the barony reverted to his father and, on his death, together with the Earldom to his younger brother as 2nd Earl. The earldom became extinct when his youngest brother, the 3rd Earl, died childless on April 26, 1681. The barony fell to his third degree nephew as the 6th baron.
