Kenneth Alexander Howard, 1st Earl of Effingham (born November 29, 1767 in Arundel , West Sussex , † February 13, 1845 in Brighton ) was a British nobleman and general .

Origin and youth

Howard was a son of Lieutenant-General Thomas Howard and a descendant in the male line of William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham . His mother Maria Mackenzie is descended from William Mackenzie, 5th Earl of Seaforth on his father's side and from William Mackenzie, 5th Earl of Seaforth on his mother's side. From 1781 to 1786 Howard was Ehrenpage (Page of Honor) of King George III.

Military career

In 1786, Howard joined the Coldstream Guards as Ensign . From February 1793 to May 1795 he served with his regiment in Flanders. He has been promoted several times over the years; In 1797 he was already Lieutenant-Colonel . The following year he became Chief of Staff of the Footguards and took part in the British-Russian invasion of Holland in 1799. In 1805 he was promoted to colonel and aide-de-camp of the king and in 1810 to major-general .

From January 1811 Howard fought, initially as commander of a brigade of the 1st Division, in the Peninsular War . He later commanded a division under Sir John Hope . He fought with his troops in the battles of Fuentes de Oñoro , Arroyo dos Molinos and Almaraz . Because of the latter two battles, Howard was Mentioned in Despatches . In the following years he took part in several battles of the campaign, such as the Battle of Vitoria and the Battle of the Nive .

After the war, Howard became Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth and Commander of the Southwest Military District of England. Because of this role, he did not take part in the Battle of Waterloo , but then commanded a division during the occupation of Paris . In 1819 he was promoted to lieutenant general and in 1837 to general.

Nobility title

Howard inherited in 1816 by Richard Howard, 4th Earl of Effingham , a cousin of the third degree, whose subsidiary titles of nobility as the 12th Baron Howard of Effingham and became a member of the House of Lords . The earl dignity of his cousin expired on his death, but was reassigned to Howard in 1837 as 1st Earl of Effingham .

On May 27, 1800, Howard married Lady Charlotte Primrose (1776 - September 17, 1864), a daughter of Neil Primrose, 3rd Earl of Rosebery . The couple had two sons and three daughters. When Howard died, his titles passed to his eldest son, Henry .
