SiteKiosk is a kiosk software developed in Germany to secure publicly accessible computers as well as information and internet terminals . It is based on the proprietary Microsoft Windows operating system and optionally Microsoft Internet Explorer or Google Chrome and is chargeable. A version for the Android operating system is also available.

Basic principle

By using the software, devices can be operated in so-called kiosk mode . The integrated web browser is based on the Chromium project of the Chrome browser or on the web browser control of the Internet Explorer , depending on the configuration option. SiteKiosk overlays the standard user interface of the operating system and enables protected access to selected websites and applications.

The Android version works according to the same principle and is based on the browser integrated in the operating system.

Range of functions

With the help of SiteKiosk it is possible to restrict access to the operating system, the system settings, programs and websites individually from the boot process to shutdown. A youth protection filter is also integrated, which can prevent access to websites that are harmful to minors. In addition to these primary security functions, the software also offers the option of individual presentation of start pages or the integrated browser through skins .

In addition, the devices operated with SiteKiosk can be checked for repair and maintenance purposes using optional remote maintenance software .

Alternatives

The possibilities of a rudimentary kiosk mode are already integrated as standard in various operating systems, e.g. B. in all operating system versions of macOS . The activation of the range of services on the Mac is done by using it as a so-called guest user. Numerous other differentiation options can be made. All functions have been available free of charge since their introduction.
