Charles Howard, 2nd Earl of Nottingham ( September 17, 1579 - October 3, 1642 ) was an English nobleman.

Life

Charles Howard was born on September 17, 1579 in Bletchingley as the second son of Charles Howard, 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham from his first marriage to Katherine Carey. Father and grandfather were both British Grand Admirals and came from the famous English noble Howards family , headed by the Duke of Norfolk . He died in Leatherhead on October 8, 1642 and was buried in Reigate .

Political career

He was already involved in politics at a young age and was elected to the English House of Commons as a member of the English House of Commons for Bletchingley for the October / November 1597 session at the age of eighteen . Then he was 1597/98 MP for the county of Surrey , 1601 and 1604 to 1611 for the county of Sussex and for Shoreham 1614. In addition, he was Keeper of the Windsor Great Park from October 22, 1601 to November 11, 1616. May 1603 he received the accolade . On November 4, 1603 he was appointed administrator of the Ditton Park Royal Castle in Buckinghamshire . In 1605 he accompanied his father, who had meanwhile been raised to Earl of Nottingham (1596), on his way to Spain against the Spanish Armada . On July 27, 1621, he became Lord Lieutenant of the County of Surrey as representative of the Crown , an office which he held until his death on October 8, 1641. From 1626 to 1638 he was also Vice Admiral of Sussex.

His older brother William Howard had meanwhile prematurely inherited the paternal title of Baron Howard of Effingham through Writ of Acceleration , but had died in 1615 without male descendants, so that when his father died in December 1624, Charles Howard had his title as 2nd Earl of Nottingham and 4. Baron Howard of Effingham inherited. A hereditary seat in the English House of Lords was also associated with the titles .

Marriages

He married twice, first marriage on May 19, 1597 Charity Whit, and after her death in second marriage on April 22, 1620 Mary Cokayne. Both marriages remained childless. His younger half-brother Charles Howard inherited his title of nobility when he died .
