Keith Ashfield

Keith Ashfield PC (born March 28, 1952 in Fredericton , New Brunswick - † April 22, 2018 ) was a Canadian politician with the Conservative Party of Canada . Between 2010 and 2011 he was Minister for National Income and Minister for Opportunities for Atlantik-Canada, and between 2011 and 2013 Minister for Fisheries and Oceans in the 28th Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister Stephen Harper .

Life

Entrepreneur, MP and Minister in New Brunswick

Ashfield began studying business administration at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton after school, but dropped out after two years to work in companies in his hometown. After working as a manager for some time , he went into business for himself.

In the mid-1980s, Ashfield began his political involvement in local politics and was trustee of the Fredericton School Council in 1986.

On July 6, 1999 he was elected to the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly for the Conservative Party and initially represented the New Maryland constituency until September 17, 2006 and then the New Maryland-Sundbury West constituency until September 8, 2008 . Immediately after his election, he became deputy speaker of the Legislative Assembly on July 6, 1999 and held this office until June 8, 2003.

Ashfield was then appointed to the New Brunswick Province government by Prime Minister Bernard Lord on June 27, 2003 , where he served as Minister of Natural Resources until September 17, 2006.

Member of the House of Commons and Federal Minister

In the election of October 14, 2008 Ashfield was elected for the first time for the Conservative Party as a member of the House of Commons and represented there after his re-election in the election of May 2, 2011 the constituency of Fredericton .

Ashfield took over his first government office in federal politics on October 30, 2008 as Minister of State in the Agency for the Opportunities of Atlantik-Canada and held this until January 18, 2010.

He was then appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to Canada's 28th Cabinet, where he was Minister for National Income until May 17, 2011 and at the same time Minister for Opportunities for Atlantic Canada. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he took over the office of Minister for Fisheries and Oceans on May 18, 2011 and held this position until July 14, 2013. At the same time he acted between January 19, 2010 and July 14, 2013 as Minister for the Atlantic Transit and as Minister for New Brunswick. At the same time he was also Vice-Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Environment and Energy Security from October 15, 2010 to January 3, 2011.
