Daniel Milík
Daniel Milík (according to the list of bishops of Prague also Daniel II (Milík) ; † March 30, 1214 ) was Bishop of Prague .
Life
Daniel Milík's date of birth and origin are unknown. He is said to have come from a simple background and to have been the chaplain of Duke Vladislav Heinrich , the younger brother of Ottokar I Přemysl .
After the death of the Duke of Bohemia and Prague Bishop Heinrich Břetislav III. followed him in the office of Duke Vladislav Heinrich. At a meeting of clergy and people, he appointed Daniel Milík as the new bishop of Prague and introduced him to the office. This was the first investiture of a Prague bishop by a sovereign.
Despite this relationship of dependency, Daniel managed to bring about a reconciliation between Vladislav Heinrich and Ottokar I. Přemysl. Ottokar retained the title of prince and sovereignty over Bohemia and Moravia . Vladislav Heinrich became Margrave of Moravia.
Although the right to vote in chapters was never practiced up to then, Provost Arnold von Sadská raised an objection to the Roman Curia against Daniel's rulership as bishop. His personal ambitions for the bishopric are said to have played a role. Pope Innocent III then commissioned the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Ludolf von Kroppenstedt, to investigate the events in 1198 . This decided in favor of Daniel. Nevertheless, shortly afterwards, Arnold again slandered the bishop for allegedly indecent conduct. Then in April 1200 the Pope instructed the Archbishop of Mainz Siegfried von Eppstein , the Passau Bishop Wolfger von Erla and the Bishop of Regensburg, Konrad von Laichling , to quote Daniel before the Curia. Only Daniel's representatives appeared there on March 25, 1201. The curia then demanded Daniel's justification before the Archbishop of Salzburg, Eberhard, by submitting certificates of good conduct from five ecclesiastical dignities . At the same time he was threatened with the elevation of office. After the bishops Konrad von Laichling (Regensburg) and Berthold (Naumburg) as well as the Benedictine abbots Kuno von Břevnov , Blažej von Sázava and Silvester von Kladrau had given Daniel a positive testimony, he was confirmed in his office by the curia on May 5, 1202 .
Daniel showed little interest in church reform. During his tenure, his diocese was divided into parishes and several churches were consecrated. He was the first Prague bishop to issue a certificate of indulgence for the church of Lhota in 1200 and one for the church of Rynárec in 1203. In the same year took place in Rome the canonization of St. Prokop , the first abbot of the monastery Sázava. In 1207 Daniel confirmed the founding of the Cistercian monastery in Mašťov , which was moved to Ossegg six years later . In Ossegg , Daniel consecrated the St. Peter and Paul Church and the cemetery. In 1211, in the presence of the king, he consecrated two altars of the monastery church of the Premonstratensian monastery in Zábrdovice in Moravia. He is said to have collected a significant amount to promote the crusade .
The documents issued by Duke Vladislav Heinrich in favor of ecclesiastical institutions were regularly attested by Daniel in his capacity as Prague bishop. Several of these documents indicate that the respective privileges are due to Daniel. In dealing with King Přemysl Ottokar I, he proved to be compliant. When he wanted to enter into a second marriage with Konstanze von Ungarn , Daniel declared the marriage to Adelheid von Meißen invalid in 1198/1199 and gave the fourth degree of relationship as the reason. Although the marriage resulted in a son and three daughters, Adelheid was unsuccessful in her appointment to the curia.
After his death, Daniel was probably buried in St. Vitus Cathedral.
