Zdeňka Hledíková (born October 23, 1938 in Prague ; † November 13, 2018 there ) was a Czech historian , mediavist , archivist , codicologist and palaeographer . Her main focus was the church history of Bohemia in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Life

Zdeňka Hledíková studied 1955-1960 Archival Science at the Charles University in Prague . Since she was denied a university career for political reasons, she first worked as an archivist at the State Archives in Pilsen and Mnichovo Hradiště and then at the Czechoslovak Film Archive in Prague. In the run-up to the Prague Spring , she was allowed to work as a secretary at Charles University in 1965. Subsequently, she worked in various positions at the Faculty of Philosophy. After receiving her doctorate in 1967, she worked as a research assistant at the Faculty of History until 1991. Only after the political changeIn 1991 she was allowed to do her habilitation . Five years later she was given the chair of historical auxiliary sciences at Charles University. Her academic students included Jan Hrdina, Petr Kubín and Ladislav Macek .

The focus of her work was the history of the diocese or archbishopric of Prague and its suffragans as well as the bishops and archbishops in the 14th and 15th centuries, among them above all John IV of Dražice , Ernst von Pardubitz and John Očko von Wlašim . From 1993 to 2009 she headed the Czech Historical Institute in Rome ( Český historický ústav v Římě ), of which she continued to be a member. Since 1998 she was a member of the International Commission for Paleography.

In 2010 she was the first Czech woman to be awarded the Papal Order of Gregory (Ordo Sancti Gregorii Magni). In 2012 she was honored with the Milada Prausová Prize. On the occasion of her 70th birthday in 2008, the band “Facta probant homines: sborník příspěvků k životnímu jubileu prof. dr. Zdeňky Hledíkové ”dedicated.
