Sportfreunde Walsum (officially: Sportfreunde Walsum 09 eV ) is a sports club from the Duisburg district of Walsum . The first soccer team played for four years in the highest amateur league in the Lower Rhine region.

history

The club was created on August 24, 1958 through the merger of the Spiel und Sport 09 Walsum club, founded in 1909, with the Sportfreunde Vierlinden, founded in 1925 . The footballers from Spiel und Sport played in the leagues of the German youth force and played in the top division in the 1920s. In 1923 the Walsumers became Gaumeister. After the National Socialists came to power , games and sports were forcibly dissolved. The re-establishment took place after the end of the Second World War . Before the merger, the Vierlindener were the more successful team. They rose in 1951 in the district class and in 1958 in the Lower Rhine regional league .

So the sports fans started in the second highest amateur league. There it went up and in 1963, four points ahead of 1. FC Bocholt, they were promoted to the Niederrhein Association . After a tenth place in the promotion season 1963/64, the Walsumer needed a year later a 3-0 win in the decider against Eintracht Duisburg to create relegation. In 1966, Sportfreunde reached their sporting zenith with seventh place, before relegation to the regional league followed a year later. There the team did not get beyond mediocrity and rose in 1970 in the district class. Although the Walsumers were able to go straight up again, as early as 1973 they went down again in the district class.

The Sportfreunde became an elevator team between the regional and regional leagues. In 1978 and 1982 the Walsumer rose to the regional league, 1980 and 1989 again from the district league. In 1990 the Sportfreunde were even passed into the district league A and in 2001 reached the sporting low point with the descent into the district league B. Two years later, the team rose again. Since relegation again in 2004, the Sportfreunde have been competing in the district B league.
