Berthold II. († after September 1, 1219 ) was Bishop of Naumburg from 1186 to 1206 .

Life

Berthold's origins are unknown; he seems to have owned land in Groß- and Kleinjena not far from Naumburg . From 1171 to 1185 he can be verified as a canon in Naumburg and accompanied Udo II von Veldenz to the court of Emperor Barbarossa in Altenburg . After Udo's death, he was elected Bishop of Naumburg in 1186 and ordained by Archbishop Wichmann von Seeburg that same year.

Berthold is heavily involved in imperial affairs, and is so often at the government seats of the emperors Barbarossa and Heinrich VI. verifiable. He remained loyal to the latter in 1192 when the dispute with Henry the Lion intensified. He took an active part in the Reichstag in 1195 in Gelnhausen and Worms , and in 1196 in Würzburg . Presumably he took part in the fourth crusade from 1197 and can be found again in the areas of the Holy Roman Empire in 1198 when he takes part in the council in Acre in 1198 , where the Teutonic Order is founded and can be found again in his diocese in the same year.

After the death of the emperor, he agreed to the election of Philip of Swabia , protested in 1202 with other episcopal potentates against the interference of the papal legates in his electoral rights and during this time he seemed to be in poor health because he was represented. In 1203 he was for the last time at the Princely Assembly in Altenburg. Since then you can only meet him mainly as the regulator of his diocese, for which he exchanged and acquired various possessions. But you can also find him as a documentary witness outside of his diocese, primarily in the Archdiocese of Magdeburg, and takes part in the consecration of the Altzella monastery .

In later years he no longer seems to have the trust of the Curia. Thereupon he resigned his office in 1206 and renounced his diocese before King Philip of Swabia. He retired to the Schulpforte monastery . As auxiliary bishop in Naumburg , he was last named in a document on September 1, 1219 at the inauguration of a chapel in Lausnitz monastery . There is an image of Berthold II from the 13th century in the so-called priest window in the west choir of Naumburg Cathedral . In addition, some bracteates are known from his time , which show him sitting in relief with changing symbols.
