Frederick I (Prague)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich I (Czech: Bedřich I ; * around 1117; † January 31, 1179 ) was Bishop of Prague .

Life

Friedrich, son of Count Palatine Friedrich IV , is said to have been a relative of the Bohemian Queen Judith of Thuringia . He was a Premonstratensian canon in Magdeburg and later moved to the Strahov Monastery .

After the death of the elected but not yet consecrated Prague bishop Gotpold , Frederick was elected his successor with the support of Queen Judith in 1169. It is not known by whom and where his episcopal ordination took place.

The term of office of Bishop Friedrich fell at a politically troubled time. In 1172, Duke Vladislav II , who had been King of Bohemia since 1158 , relinquished the throne in favor of his son Friedrich . Since he had not obtained the consent of Emperor Barbarossa for this, Friedrich had to resign. The successor Soběslav II , who was enfeoffed only as duke by the emperor, drove Duke Friedrich out.

Since Bishop Friedrich was a supporter of King Vladislav and his son Friedrich, he made himself unpopular at the new ducal court. Relations between the bishop and the reigning Duke Soběslav deteriorated again when Pope Alexander excommunicated the Duke in 1177 because he had devastated churches in Lower Austria during a campaign .

Because Bishop Friedrich did not speak the national language, he was not very popular with the people either. He did not live to see the return of the expelled Duke Friedrich and his imperial enfeoffment, as he died a few months earlier.
