Ekkehard (Prague)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ekkehard (also: Ekhard; Helicardus ; † August 8, 1023 ) was Bishop of Prague .

Ekkehard is said to have been a relative of Emperor Heinrich II . At a young age he joined the Benedictine order and was a monk in the Bohemian monastery Břevnov . He later became abbot of the Nienburg monastery . In old age he was appointed provost of the Prague cathedral chapter .

After the death of Prague bishop Thiddag , Ekkehard was elected as his successor, although Duke Udalrich wanted to enforce his court chaplain Přibislav. After the imperial enfeoffment, he was ordained bishop in Merseburg on October 6, 1017 by the Mainz Metropolitan Erkanbald .

During his tenure, Ekkehard regularly held diocesan synods , which allowed him to influence the clergy and, through them, the people. Twice a year, the clergy had to personally report to the bishop about their pastoral work and, in turn, accept orders from the bishop. Ekkehard, who spoke the local language, is said to have been a respected preacher.
