Peter Edvard Holm (born January 26, 1833 in Copenhagen ; † May 18, 1915 there ) was a Danish historian.

Life

Holm studied philology and history in Copenhagen and became a lecturer in 1865 and professor of history at the University of Copenhagen in 1868 . In 1883 and 1891 he was the rector of the university.

After he had published several works on the history of antiquity ( The Political Position of the Greek Subjects under the Roman Emperors ; The Clergy and the State from the End of the Reign of Constantine the Great to the Fall of the Western Roman Empire ), he devoted himself to Northern European history and wrote:

  • Denmark's policy under den svensk-russiske Krig fra 1788–90 (1868);
  • Danmark-Norges udenrigske Historie fra 1791-1807 (1875, vol.);
  • Holbergs statsretslige og politiske Synsmaade (1879);
  • Danmark-Norges indre Historie under Enevaelden from 1660 to 1720 (1885);
  • Nogle Hovedtraek af Trykke Frihedstiden's history 1770–73 (1885–86, 2 vols.).

He also provided a series of treatises on the political and social history of Denmark in the 18th century for the Historisk Tidskrift, which he edited .

Holm had been a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences since 1867 and a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences since 1904 . He was also a member of the Swedish Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies , the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala and the Norwegian Academy of Sciences .
