After the death of Bishop Budilov in Rome in 1226, Johann was elected as his successor by the members of the Prague cathedral chapter who were present there. The episcopal ordination took of Mainz Metropolitan Siegfried of Eppstein and the bishops Friedrich von Kirchberg from Halberstadt and Albert of Bekeshovede from Riga on 19 December 1227 in Erfurt's St. Peter's Church before.

During his tenure he supported the Premonstratensian monasteries of Tepl and Chotěšov and probably founded the collegiate chapter near St. Aegid in Prague's old town . With the Benedictine monastery Břevnov he led a long-standing dispute over property rights.
