Joachim Otto Kaiser (born December 30, 1929 in Erfurt ; † March 28, 2010 in Erfurt) was a German artist and cultural politician in Erfurt.

Live and act

Kaiser successfully completed an apprenticeship as a metal designer and then studied with Siegfried Kraft at the State School for Applied Arts in Erfurt at the end of the 1940s. He became a silver and goldsmith and passed the exam as a master goldsmith in 1953. The masterpiece was a pectoral cross for the Erfurt auxiliary bishop. From 1954 Kaiser worked as a freelancer in his workshop in what was then Erfurt's Leninstrasse (now Johannesstrasse again ). The committed Catholic was one of the few goldsmiths in the GDR who produced sacred art . In his 40 years of activity, Kaiser has produced large numbers and recognized quality of tabernacles, monstrances, bishop's crosses, chalices, standing and wall crosses, but also sports cups. Kaiser was represented at exhibitions in Dresden, Munich, Hanau and at the Creuzburg . He was also a representative of the interests of the Thuringian arts and crafts.

The marriage of Kaiser with his wife Gisela had three children. The sons Mathias and Johannes have also become successful metal designers, silversmiths and qualified designers. Johannes Kaiser has been running his father's workshop since 1995.

From 1990 to 2009 Kaiser was City Councilor in Erfurt for the CDU , and from 1994 to 2004 he was an honorary cultural representative . He shaped the cultural development of the state capital Erfurt for many years. In addition, he was a member of the culture committee of the German Association of Cities . As Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Kaisersaal Erfurt GmbH, Kaiser played a major role in the reconstruction and development of the Kaisersaal in Erfurt. He was also chairman of the board of trustees for the Krämerbrücke in Erfurt. In 2009 the city of Erfurt made Kaiser an honorary citizen for his services .
