The Kaisersaal in Erfurt

The Kaisersaal is a traditional culture and congress center in the old town of Erfurt . The Erfurt Prince Congress of Emperor Napoleon I and Tsar Alexander I took place here in 1808 and the Erfurt Party Conference of the SPD in 1891 . On April 12, 1946, at a joint meeting in the Kaisersaal, communists and social democrats made the “decision on the unification of the KPD and SPD to form the Socialist Unity Party of Germany SED ” at the local level.

The history of the house is particularly connected to many famous artists such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich von Schiller , Niccolò Paganini , Clara Schumann and Franz Liszt . It served as a ballroom for the University of Erfurt and as a city theater.

In 1831 the house, including the theater, was rebuilt and given its classical facade. In 1871 the hall was redesigned as a concert and ballroom and named Kaisersaal with reference to the establishment of the German Empire in the same year . In 1960 it was redesigned as a cultural center for the “Optima” office machinery plant and as a memorial to the “ Erfurt Party Congress 1891”. In 1982 the building had to be closed for structural reasons, and renovation work began in the late 1980s. From 1991 to 1994, after the reunification and reunification, extensive reconstruction and restoration took place as a culture and congress center. The Düsseldorf architectural office Miksch und Partner (today Miksch Rücker + Partner Architects, Düsseldorf) was commissioned with the planning and construction management. The inauguration of the restored and expanded facility took place in 1994 with the participation of the then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau . Since then, the complex has been used as a cultural and event center.

The “Clara” restaurant belonging to the Kaisersaal received a Michelin star in November 2013 , which was defended in 2016 by Johannes Wallner .
