Melchior Ndadaye (born March 28, 1953 in Mwaro , † October 21, 1993 in Bujumbura ) was the first elected President of Burundi .

Ndadaye, who was a member of the Hutu community , was elected in the first democratic presidential election in June 1993 . Less than four months later, he was kidnapped and murdered by Tutsi military personnel during a coup . His death sparked civil war in Burundi.
