Life

Évariste Ndayishimiye comes from a Hutu family from Burundi. He was just enrolled as a law student at the University of Burundi when Burundi's civil war broke out in 1995. He rose rapidly in the ranks of the CNDD-FDD, he was Minister for Internal Affairs and Public Security from 2006 to 2007 and Secretary General of the ruling party CNDD-FDD from 2016 to January 2020. He served in the civil war for Hutu militias in the 1990s and was later promoted to major general.

Ndayishimiye was nominated by his party in January 2020 as a candidate for the Burundian presidential election on May 20, 2020 . He won the vote in the first ballot with around 69% of the vote and was due to take office at the end of August. A few days after the sudden death of his predecessor Nkurunziza on June 8, 2020, the Burundian constitutional court ruled that he should take up his post earlier. June 18th was set as the date.
