origin

His parents were the captain in the Dutch service Fredrik von Vegesack and his wife Sofia Magdalene von Blücher . In 1791 he married Anna Beata Hammarfelt.

Life

In 1777 the family moved to Sweden. Two years later he became a page with King Gustav III. and 1784 cornet in the body regiment. In 1788 he was promoted to captain in the Russo-Swedish War . He was sent to Dalarna , where he took over a company of the local volunteer corps against the Danes. But when this was immediately disbanded, he received a newly established hunter battalion, which he led to Finland. There he distinguished himself by great bravery and was appointed major in the army in 1789 and lieutenant colonel in 1790. In 1797 he became adjudant general and in 1800 chief of the Savolaks brigade. In 1801 he became adjutant general of the army department that gathered in Gothenburg for the fight against England. In 1802 he was awarded the title of baron. During the war in Pomerania 1805–1807 he led the Fourth Brigade, was again distinguished by particular bravery and was seriously wounded in a battle of retreat. In 1808 he became major general and in command of the left wing of the Western Army. With this he moved into Norway. From there he was appointed commander of the so-called "Swedish Division", which he was supposed to bring to Pori by sea . Due to adverse circumstances, however, he came to Kristinestad on August 28th . After he had united with the Finnish army there, he took part in the battle of Oravais , which is why he was ordered to Stockholm and tried before a court-martial for failing to go to the landing site ordered. He was acquitted by the court martial , but sentenced to life imprisonment by King Gustav IV Adolf . But the removal of the king in 1809 prevented enforcement. In 1812 he became lieutenant general . In 1813, during the war against Napoleon, he belonged to the Northern Army and commanded a division of 4,000-5,000 men under General Count Wallmoden on the lower reaches of the Elbe . In February 1814 he was appointed military governor of Lübeck .

In the war against Norway he captured the Fredrikshald fortress , but suffered a defeat in the battle of Langnes-Schanze , the last armed conflict between Scandinavian countries. In 1816 he became inspector of the Ninth Infantry Brigade.
