Detlev Ganten (2017)

Detlev Ganten (born March 28, 1941 in Lüneburg ) is a specialist in pharmacology and clinical pharmacology. He has been President of the World Health Summit since 2009 . From 1973 to 1991 he was professor at the Pharmacological Institute of Heidelberg University and from 1997 to 2001 chairman of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. From 1991 to 2004 Ganten was founding director of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin-Buch . From 2004 to 2008 he was chairman of the board of the new Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and from 2005 to 2015 he was chairman of the foundation board of the Charité foundation; since 2016 he has been its honorary chairman.

Life

Ganten grew up in Bremen and trained as an agricultural assistant in Elmshorn , which he completed in 1959. He then studied medicine in Würzburg from 1962 and passed the Physikum there in 1964 . From 1964 to 1965 he continued his medical studies in Montpellier ( France ) before working in the surgical department of the French hospital Mamounia in Marrakech ( Morocco ). From 1966 to 1968 he continued his medical studies in Tübingen and finished his studies there with the medical state examination .

In 1968 he received his doctorate in the surgical clinic of the University of Tübingen. The subsequent medical assistant time in 1968/69 took place in internal medicine in Tübingen and in gynecology and obstetrics at the Emden Municipal Hospital . In 1970 he received his license to practice medicine . From 1969 to 1973 a research stay at the Clinical Research Institute in Montréal , Canada followed. In 1973 he was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at McGill University in Montréal for his scientific work there. From 1973 to 1991 worked Ganten of Pharmacology at the University of Heidelberg and his habilitation in 1974 of Experimental Medicine. In 1975 he received a professorship in Heidelberg and in 1978 he was recognized as a specialist in pharmacology.

After German reunification, Ganten was appointed founding director of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch by the Federal Minister of Research in 1991 with the task of reorganizing the central institutes of the GDR Academy of Sciences there. In 1993 he also took over the chair for clinical pharmacology at the Medical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin. From 1997 to 2001 he was chairman of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, to which the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch belongs.

In 2004, Ganten was appointed chairman of the board of the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin by the Senate of the City of Berlin Unite the roof of the new "Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin". On September 1, 2008, he handed over the position of chairman of the board to the former chairman of the Science Council, Professor Karl Max Einhäupl .

In 2009, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Charité, Ganten launched the World Health Summit , which has been held annually in Berlin since then. The academic backbone of this international global health conference is the "M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies".

Since spring 2019, Ganten has been involved in the Scientists for Future initiative together with other scientists .

Research areas

Ganten's research areas are primarily in the study of blood pressure regulation and the causes of high blood pressure . He clarified the basic mechanisms of the development of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension and was particularly concerned with the hormonal regulation and treatment of high blood pressure, especially the renin-angiotensin system . From this research new effective drugs for the treatment of high blood pressure and its sequelae, vascular damage, arteriosclerosis, stroke, kidney failure, myocardial infarction and heart failure have emerged. Ganten has used methods of molecular genetics, genomics and molecular analysis, especially transgenic techniques, in his research and further developed them for pharmacological and medical issues.

In addition, he worked on the evolution of genes for cardiovascular regulation and participated in the development of the concept of evolutionary medicine and a holistic, holistic approach to health and disease.
