Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America , Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, or PNAS , is a scientific journal published by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America . It has been published weekly as a printed edition since 1915 and covers all scientific disciplines, with a focus on articles from biology and related areas such as medicine and biotechnology . The current editor has been May Berenbaum since 2019 .
Prior to publication in PNAS, scientific publications are subject to a peer review , i.e. a technical assessment by other scientists who act as independent reviewers . Members of the Academy are entitled to organize the peer review process for up to four of their own publications per year.
The total number of articles published in PNAS to date is one of the highest of any scientific journal. The impact factor as a measure of the average number of citations per published article was 9.661 in 2016, making PNAS the fourth-highest impact factor of all 64 multidisciplinary journals after Nature , Science and Nature Communications .
Six months after publication, PNAS articles are freely accessible online in full text (so-called delayed open access ).
