Rodney Austin Atkins (born March 28, 1969 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) is an American country singer.

Career

Atkins did not begin to make music until he was in high school, but was soon performing in the local area. During his studies at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville , he kept going to Nashville and performing in the local country clubs. In 1997 he got a recording deal and began recording his debut album. But his first two releases flopped and even unsatisfied with the result, the completion of the album was delayed and was finally given up completely.

After that, it was not until 2002 that Atkins made a second attempt. Although the next two singles and the album had Honesty only moderate success, but with the song Honesty (Write Me a List) , he was left with a promising hit the country top 5 reached and also in the Hot 100 well-ran .

His breakthrough came in 2006 with his second album If You're Going Through Hell . The album reached number 1 in the US country charts and sold more than a million times. Furthermore, the first four singles were all at number 1 in the country charts and the first two also went gold (for 500,000 copies sold). At the Country Music Awards in 2006 he was appointed as Best New Male Artist award.

Three years later, the album It's America was released , which was a great success and brought with the title song its fifth number one hit.

Private

Atkins was first married to Tammy Jo McDonald from 1998 to 2012. The two have a son. Atkins was temporarily arrested in 2011 after an argument with his wife. Atkins filed for divorce. He has been married to the singer Rose Falcon since November 2013 . A son was born in December 2017.
