Silvestro Valier

Silvestro Valier (born March 28, 1630 in Venice ; † July 7, 1700 there ) was the 109th Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1694 to 1700.

After his glamorous predecessor, the last of the great Venetian war heroes Francesco Morosini , who combined all the qualities that made Venice great, Silvestro Valier was followed by a doge who loved festivals, theater and luxury.

Life

Silvestro was the son of the 102nd Doge Bertuccio Valier . He was elected Doge on February 25, 1694 after losing out twice in previous elections.

The Doge's Office

The coronation of Doge and Dogaressa Elisabetta Querini took place on March 4, 1694. The festivities, during which the Doge generously gave away silver coins, lasted for several weeks.

The office of captain general was entrusted to Antonio Zeno, whose actions were initially successful. He conquered the island of Chios , but failed to pursue the Turkish troops and soon saw Chios besieged by them again. He was dismissed for incapacity and died before his trial was opened.

On the occasion of a state visit by the Russian Tsar Peter the Great in 1698, the republic was given one last opportunity to display the fairytale splendor for which it was famous. Venice concluded a three-year treaty with the tsar for the following conflicts with the Ottoman Empire .

Valier was buried on July 7, 1700 in San Zanipolo , as was his wife, who outlived him by seven years.

Tomb

The huge baroque tomb of the Valier, which was erected for the Doges Betuccio and Silvestro and his wife Elisabetta Querini, is located in a side aisle of Zanipolo, the favorite church of the Venetian Doges. The tomb is framed on both sides by two colossal Corinthian columns made of black marble. They stand on high pedestals decorated with high reliefs with allegorical figures . The larger-than-life figures of the two Doges and the Dogaressa stand on a sarcophagus . A crowd of putti hold the moving cloths with which the grave is richly decorated.

The architects of the tomb are Paolo and Andrea Tirali , under whose direction the monument was built between 1705 and 1708. The sculptors involved were Giovanni Bonazza, sculptor of the statue of Dogaressa, Antonio Tarsia, from whom the two doge statues come, Pietro Baratta and others. Marino Gruppello is the sculptor of the base reliefs.

The Valier tomb is the last of the great doge tombs in Venice.
