The velvet nuthatch ( Sitta frontalis ) is a species of nuthatch found in India , Sri Lanka , southern China, and Indonesia . It lives in forests, especially evergreen forests.
features
The 12.5 cm long velvet forehead nuthatch has a large head, a short tail and a powerful beak. The plumage is blue-purple on top with lavender cheeks. The underside of the plumage is beige with a whitish chest. The beak is red and there is a black spot on the forehead. The male has a black over-eye stripe that is missing in the female. The young birds are less colorful than the adults. Like other nuthatches, it has the ability to walk down logs. The diet consists of insects and spiders. The velvet nuthatch is a sociable bird that also forms flocks with other songbirds.
Reproduction
The nest is a hollow in a tree that is padded with moss, hair, feathers or grass. If the entrance to the cave is too big, it is made smaller with mud. The clutch consists of up to six red-spotted white eggs.
