The Schönrainer Liederhandschrift , also referred to in literature as Büdinger fragments or Büdinger fragments , is a text collection of epic and lyrical poetry in Middle High German with a clear “ Hessian touch” that was created in Hesse around 1330 . The 25-sheet, small-format fragment contains song poems by Reinmar von Zweter , parts from the epic “Book of Troye” (“Trojan War ”) by Konrad von Würzburg and from the collection of song poems “ Singers' War on the Wartburg ”.

history

Two sheets each are in the possession of the university libraries in Basel and Kassel .

The remaining, largest part of the fragment belonged to the holdings of the Princely House of Ysenburg and Büdingen for centuries . The sheets were discovered as parchment waste between 1850 and 1980 and restored. They had previously served as covers for the quarterly accounts of the Schönrain office , which was in the hands of the Counts of Ysenburg towards the end of the 16th century. In 2003, the 21 sheets appeared in the art trade along with the remains of a 22nd sheet of paper from the Büdingen holdings written on one side, together with other valuable pieces from the possession of the Princes of Ysenburg and Büdingen (Jörn Günther, Hamburg). After doubts about the legality of the sale had arisen , the Fideikommiss dissolution court at the Higher Regional Court of Kassel decided that it was not archival material and the manuscript could therefore be sold. Due to its importance as a national cultural asset , however, it is only allowed to be sold domestically. The “Marburg Repertory of German-Language Manuscripts of the 13th and 14th Century” lists these sheets as part of the “Fürstl. Ysenburg and Büdingen Archive ”. It was not known for a long time whether this manuscript, which is regarded as an important cultural asset, could be bought by a public collection, such as the Kassel State Library , which was originally interested in buying it. On March 26, 2008 it was announced that the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel had acquired the pieces. This meant that the fragments, which the previous owner in Hamburg had lavishly restored and incorporated, did not come to the most appropriate place (namely to Kassel), but, according to one critic, to an institution that “has the thickest wallet”.
