Luciano Figueroa (born May 19, 1981 in Santa Fe ) is a former Argentine football player of Italian descent.
Career
The striker began his professional career at Rosario Central in the Argentine Primera División, where he played together with César Delgado in attack. In the Clausura 2002/03 he was top scorer with 17 goals. In the last game of the season, the 7-2 win against Boca Juniors, he scored five goals.
Figueroa then moved to Birmingham City in the English Premier League for £ 2.5million . In Birmingham, however, he could not build on his previous achievements. On the recommendation of his former strike partner Delgado, he was then hired by the Mexican first division club Cruz Azul . There he found his way back to old form and scored 21 goals in 34 games in 2004.
His high number of hits meant that he was signed by Villarreal CF in November 2004 for £ 2.1million . In August 2005, in a 2-1 victory over Everton, Lucho scored the first Champions League goal in Villarreal's history. In January 2006, he moved to River Plate on loan , but where he was injured after only a few games.
He was finally sold surprisingly to CFC Genoa in the second Italian division in the summer of the same year . Due to an injury Figueroa could not play a game for Genoa in his first season. The club rose to Serie A in 2007 as third place . After 21 games for Genoa, Figueroa was loaned to Boca Juniors in 2008 . After the loan, he returned to CFC Genoa. There, together with Hernán Crespo and Rodrigo Palacio , went hunting for goals. In 2010 Figueroa moved back to Argentina and signed again with his first professional club, Rosario Central, before moving to the Ecuadorian club CS Emelec in 2011 . After an interlude at Panathinaikos Athens , Figueroa moved to Johor FC in Malaysia in 2013 . After an early retirement in December 2015, he returned to Johor FC in November 2017.
National team
With the Argentine national team he took part in the Copa America 2004 and the Confederations Cup in 2005 . Lucho was part of the team that won Olympic gold in 2004. He has scored nine goals in 15 appearances for Argentina so far.
In early March 2006 Figueroa suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his knee. He was therefore out for a long time and could not be used at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
