Pau Francisco Torres (born January 16, 1997 in Villarreal ) is a Spanish soccer player who is currently under contract with the first division club Villarreal . The central defender has been a Spanish international since mid-October 2019 .

In Villarreal , Valencian Community born Pau Torres began with the football at the local Villarreal . For the season 2016/17 he was promoted to the reserve team in the third-tier Segunda División B played. He made his debut on August 21, 2016 (1st matchday) in the 0-1 away defeat against UE Cornellà . He soon developed into a regular player. On October 8th (8th matchday) he succeeded in a 2-2 draw against FC Badalona . On December 20, he made his debut in the 1-1 draw against CD Toledo in the Copa del Rey 2016/17 for the first team when he came on for Víctor Ruiz in the 80th minute . This remained his only use for the men's selection this season, in which he played 34 league games for the reserve.

In the following season 2017/18 he was in the league for the first time in the matchday squad of head coach Marcelino García and later of his successor Fran Escribá . He made his debut in the top Spanish league on November 26, 2017 (13th matchday) in the 3-2 home defeat against Sevilla FC , when he came on for Manu Trigueros in the 84th minute of the game . During this season he was used in 31 league games for the reserve and completed six competitive games in the first team.

In order to collect match practice at a higher level, he was loaned to the second division club Málaga for the entire 2018/19 season. There he was an undisputed regular player in central defense from the start and completed 40 league games in which he scored one goal. After he was able to convince the Malaguistas , Villarreal decided not to extend the loan, as initially intended and brought him back after the end of the season.

There he made his breakthrough in the LaLiga in the next 2019/20 season . On October 2, 2019, he signed a new five-year contract. Four days later, he scored his first league goal for Villarreal in a 2-1 away defeat by CA Osasuna . During this season he played 34 league games in which he scored two goals.

National team

On October 4, 2019, he was nominated for the first time for the Spanish national team by head coach Robert Moreno for the qualifying games for the European Championship 2021 against Norway and Sweden . He made his debut on November 15 in a 7-0 away win in the qualifier against Malta , when he came on for Sergio Ramos in the 61st minute and scored his first international goal a minute later.
