Deoband ( Hindi : देवबंद ; Urdu دیوبند; Devband , [ ˈd̪eːo̯bʌn̪d̪ ]) is a small town in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh , 146 km north of Delhi .
It is located in the Saharanpur district and had around 97,000 inhabitants at the 2011 census. The city's importance lies primarily in the Islamic theological college of Dar ul-Ulum , which in terms of influence can only be compared with the al-Azhar University in Cairo .
