Domenico Alfani , actually Domenico di Paride Alfani (* around 1479 in Perugia ; † 1553 ibid) was an Italian Renaissance painter in Umbria .

Life

Alfani was the son of the goldsmith Paride Alfani. In Perugia he received his training together with Raffael in Perugia in the workshop of Pietro Perugino . The close friendship between Raffael and Alfani and their occasional collaboration meant that their works often resembled each other and that incorrect attributions were made in the past. Later he went to the workshop of Giulio Romano and finally to Fra Bartolomeo in Florence. In the following period he dealt with the Florentine school around Andrea del Sarto and Rosso Fiorentino , whose style had a lasting impact on the art of his last creative period. In 1510 he was accepted into the painters' guild of Perugia, in 1535 he married the mother of his children, whom he had legitimized in 1520.

The “Madonna Enthroned between Saints Nicholas and Gregory” from 1518, which is now in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria (Perugia), is considered to be his earliest surviving and probably best painting . The basis for this picture was an original drawing by Raphael about his “Mackintosh Madonna” from 1509/10 (London, National Gallery ).
