Fedele Casella

Fedele Casella (* probably around 1504 in Carona TI ; verifiable from 1522 to 1547 in Palermo ) was an Italian sculptor and plasterer .

Life

Fedele Casella probably comes from Carona and was the father of the sculptor and silversmith Scipione Casella and the son-in-law of Antonello Gagini . Together with his son Scipione († 1551) he was employed in the workshop of Antonello Gagini. From 1522 he was deputy workshop manager. In 1536 he executed Antonello Gagini's will.

Works

Several orders for the Cathedral of Palermo are documented . In 1536 he created six columns with bases and capitals for the church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo in Palermo . In 1541 he concluded with Fazio Gaggini for the execution of a marble throne in the cathedral. In 1543 he made a statue of St. John the Baptist for the Helena Altar in the cathedral. In the same year he and his son accepted the order to create a marble statue of St. Cecilia with depictions of her legend. This work was later completed by Vincenzo and Fazio Gaggini
