Giovanni Battista Mazzolo

Giovanni Battista Mazzolo was an Italian sculptor from Carrara . He was active in Messina from the first half of the 16th century .

Life

In 1530 Mazzolo created the marble decoration in the "Capella della pace" of the Cathedral of Messina . In 1534 Mazzolo completed 3 statues on the main portal of the Cathedral of Messina, these are Madonna and Child, Saints Paul and Peter. Furthermore, the figure of John the Baptist and the pulpit in the Cathedral of Messina come from him. His main work, the grave monument of the famous Archbishop Bellorado created in 1523 , is also located in the Cathedral of Messina. A marble relief from 1593 is attributed to him in the Cappella dei Canonici in the Cathedral of Messina.

There is another work in the Palazzo Bellomo in Syracuse . There he created a coat of arms for Eleonora Branciforte.
