occupation

Hurricane is a 1999 film starring Denzel Washington that describes the life of boxer Rubin Carter , who was wrongly sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 1966 .

content

The film tells the fight of the boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter against his conviction of three life imprisonment, which was imposed on him in 1966 for allegedly committed murders. A parallel plot describes how a youth from Brooklyn is interested in Carter's case and convinces his friends to campaign for the overturning of the sentence against Carter.

To the movie

Denzel Washington was nominated for an Oscar for his performance . Although the film is based on real events, the makers took a lot of artistic freedom, which the film was controversially discussed in the US press. For example, Carter's criminal past is only mentioned in passing. Washington is also shown in a uniform with awards that Carter never deserved. In a scene at the beginning of the film, victory in a fight due to a racist jury goes to Joey Giardello . In fact, he won the fight regularly. He then sued the producers; the dispute was settled out of court; allegedly he was paid $ 300,000. Some newspapers wrote that this controversy cost Washington an Oscar.

The screenplay for the film is based on Carter's autobiography The 16th Round and the biography Lazarus and the Hurricane by authors Sam Chaiton and Terry Swinton . The latter was initially the working title of the film.

background

The film was shot in the East Jersey State Prison , among others .

“The film, staged in a stylish manner using conventional narrative means, does not see itself as an athlete's portrait, but uses a prominent case to reflect the racial problem in the United States. A partisan, "politically correct" film, which above all impresses with the extraordinary performance of the main actor. "

Awards

Denzel Washington won a Golden Globe Award in 2000 for his portrayal and a Silver Bear at the 2000 Berlinale .

He was also nominated for an Oscar , but lost to Kevin Spacey .

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
