history
In 1895 the decision was made to build the prison. This happened on the land of the so-called Edgar Farm. It was put into operation in 1901. At first it was used to accommodate young first-time offenders.
conversion
In the 1930s, the prison began to be converted into an adult prison.
Riots
In the days between April 17 and April 22, 1952, there was a riot because prisoners complained about the brutality of the keepers. The uprising was brutally suppressed. In 1971, 500 prisoners took six hostages. The prisoners demanded better conditions and the hostage-taking ended bloodless.
East Jersey Prison today
In 1988, the Rahway State Prison was renamed East Jersey State Prison, as the citizens of Rahway complained about the stigma of their city name. Despite the name change, it is still colloquially referred to as Rahway State Prison. Today the prison has a number of leisure activities for the prisoners as well as various opportunities for further education.
