Avenel is a settlement and census-designated place within Woodbridge Township in Middlesex County , New Jersey , USA . In the 2010 census , 17,011 inhabitants were registered.
The East Jersey State Prison is located in Avenel and is on the border with Rahway ; although the prison is in Woodbridge Township, it has a postal address in Rahway. There is also a therapy center for sexual offenders in Avenel.
