Vegetative characteristics

The Thuringian cinquefoil is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 40 centimeters. The stem is forked and usually arching upwards, rarely it is upright and almost simple.

The basal, divided, hand-shaped leaves have six to nine (but mostly seven) partial leaves, the partial leaves are obovate, with a length of 2 to 5 centimeters, wedge-shaped at the base and have seven to ten protruding teeth on each side. They are hairy on both sides.

Generative characteristics

The flower stem is long, quite strong and stands upright even at fruit time. The flowers are yellow and 1.5 to 2 centimeters in diameter.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42.

Occurrence and endangerment

The total distribution area of Potentilla thuringiaca is still insufficiently known, for example very rarely in Switzerland . However, the main range seems to be from southeast Europe to western Russia and north to southern Scandinavia . It can also be found in the Caucasus .

The Thuringian cinquefoil occurs in Germany only from southern Thuringia via the Grabfeld (northern Bavaria) and the central Maing area to the Steigerwald (Franconia). In the Red List of Endangered Plant Species in Germany, Potentilla thuringiaca was classified in category 3 = "endangered" in 1996.

Potentilla thuringiaca grows in sunny bushes, on the edges of forests and roads, and in light oak and pine forests. It prefers moderately dry, nutrient- and base-rich, lime-poor loam and clay soils. In Central Europe it is a character species of the Geranion sanguinei association, but also occurs in the Potentillo-Quercetum from the Potentillo-Quercion petraeae association.

Taxonomy

A synonym for Potentilla thuringiaca Bernh. is Potentilla parviflora Gaud.
